Whew we finialy finished this piece.... My wife and I really soak these bears very good with wood oils and finaly got some coats of spar on them. The big bear was a request we got from the original lady who came up with the idea for the coat rack. So now its a bear family! We have had many people that come by our place tell us that they all fit so good together as a family but poppa bear was not in the original plan.

Well here you go .....here are the photos.

lol....haha....I was asked if it would fit in the back of a 4-runner ....its going from NC to PA. I said not likely ....Coming to pick it up with a trailer.

In order to stand this thing up this is what we used. the log was about ( guessing here) 600 lbs to start with....I have no scale to weigh it on, but I did cut at least most of that off my guess is that its still 200-250 lbs

Great work on the coat rack and accompanying bear! Just out of curiosity, how many of these can you do before you have to have your saw chain sharpened? I would think that seasoned walnut is relatively hard on the chain...

How many coat racks can I carve untill I need to have my chain sharpened.....More like how many times I had to stop and sharpen my chain on this one alone....I toasted two chains and had to sharpen both many of time. Not sure if the photo shows, but I use 3 saws ( All stihl's) an 025 with an 18" bar. and have two ms180's One of the 180's is a stock bar and chain .043 (smaller guage chain) and thats my main carving saw, then my other 180 has a dime tip with a 1/4 .050 guage chain. The reason I had to replace two chains was because the .043 guage chain is not as strong as the .050 guage , but cuts like a razor blade...thats how I was able to carve a piece like this with out it chipping away. Also I never go into a cut on walnut with out having the revs roaring. In order to cut walnut you have to really hold down on the throttle and let your saw scream. So you are 100% correct with it being very hard on the chain. Matter of fact I can show you chains that the teeth are lifted and bent from this project. My wife was near me and has heard several times through a screaming RPM cut my little saw came to a dead stop..... So I have had it all chipped teeth bent teeth and teeth snapped clean off. I would stop and sharpen my chain on every other tank of gas I would stop and re-sharpen my chain every other or every 3rd tank of gass, depending on where I was at at the time when cutting...I hate loosing focus in the middle of a cut when the saw starts starving for fuel, so when that happens I will throw in some gas and oil , and head right back at it at least till the cut I was making is complete.
