| | turning a leaf O.K. now that the Medallions are done,,time to catch up on some other jobs.
In other posts some have asked how to make a leaf appear as if it's turning, curling or doing something other than just laying flat. Well this job should work just fine as there a two locations I'll have them doing both. In one case it'll appear to roll over on itself,,and the other will appear to turn back in the way I described a Cobras hood to look when it flares out.
I'll try to say what chisels I'm using to work with,,and if I forget ,,remind me.But it really comes down to how big your piece is and what tools you have at hand. It doesn't have to be the exact ones I'm using. These only serve to get you in the ballpark.
For reference the wood is Mahogany,,3/4 inch thick and the left and right pieces are about 14 inches long. You can see the sketch I did,,one is just band sawed out,,and I had already started the other. These will have the leaf just curling at it's end. The other ,,only the sketch at this point because it was just approved will show the leaf actually turning over on itself as in the look of a snake.
Now just because I happen to be working on an acanthus leaf,,doesn't mean the very same principles wouldn't apply to any other type of leaf,,,or even a curl at the end of someones hair. IT'S ALL THE SAME THING. Doesn't matter. Shape is shape regardless where that shape is used. We're only carving the form. Once you have the form, filling in the details only defines what that form will be. At most any point I could turn this into hair or any other thing I want,,,including a snake.
These by the way are being used for an entry door in N.Y.city. |

| | Re: turning a leaf Sure,,,I could carve them to look like Pixie shoes as well,,,If that's what you mean.
Wanna see me do it,,,LOL
Doesn't matter to me as I said,,,I can make this anything you want. It could even be a hand partially closed if you wish. It's only a form. Details such as fingers instead of leaves would make it a hand. |

| | Re: turning a leaf HaHaHa,,,I don't know how you can see that,,I can't make out a thing in my photo's,,,even in the original. Wow,,,you guys really scan a photo don't you. Gotta' be more careful where I aim that camera.
Now 'come on Bob,,,lets try and focus on the carving O.K.?
LOL,,Oh boy ,,,what an audience...
And to be clear,,,it is tied..I just keep them loose so I can slip them on and off easily when I go in and out of the house,,,so there smarty pants!
good thing I decided to wear clothing today,,,who knows what else would accidentally show up in a photo....

| | Re: turning a leaf Ha ha ha...boys boys boys... mark I keep my Nikes the same way Hubby hates when theres little sawdust trails through the house
I am really looking forward to more pictures of this (the leaf ) I downloaded an acanthus leaf ages ago and am still not sure how to tackle it. Thank you for sharing. It's turning out lovely.
P.S.
as a rule of thumb, I try to stay dressed in the shop while working. The first thing I was taught was never wear anything loose or baggy while working with tools...ahem...sorry

| | Re: turning a leaf No,,I didn't lie to you. Since this one was pretty well along I decided to just finish it. That's why you won't see at this point roughing in,,and chisels being used.
BUT!
Now you can see just where it's going to go and how it should look as I carve the second one,,,just the mirror image of this one. You can see the finished product ,,what I'll do to start getting the shapes,,and see just how it evolves. Basically a goal to work towards. That's all I can offer at this point. Otherwise it would be " That's fine Mark,,but where did you start,,and just what is this thing supposed to look like?" And you now know if this is something you want to follow along and see how I do something like this.
Well now you can see. Give me a little time and I'll be back with more. For now,,you can see the band sawed piece and the finished one. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
