| | Re: Trying new things Plenty of great suggestions already posted. The fact that most impresses me is you decided to do something out of your comfort zone!!!That in itself is GREAT!! AND you have a really neat carving to show for it.Trying all types of carving,,whatever is out of the norm for you ,,is such a good thing. You will learn more about design,,carving, painting that will carry over to whatever you normally do and make that easier, faster and you might just look at it in a slightly different way to see new possibilities in that as well.
Hey,,just look at all the possibilities you opened up with this terrific piece you are posting here. Ecxellent work on all levels Tom! |

| | Re: Trying new things Two things come to me when I look at you piece: the squareness of the base takes away from the natural setting and to me the wizard is too small in relation to the mushroom. I know you want him to fit under the mushroom but I think he needs more bulk...like maybe wider? So now you have my 2 cents. Great mushrooms! |

| | Re: Trying new things Joy, your observations and suggestions are worth more than 2 cents. Way more! Since I am trying new and different things, I will be doing another mushroom and gnomw/wizard carving real soon. I can say for sure that my next one will not have a square base. I think you're right on with this suggestion. As to relative size of the figure in relationship to the mushrooms; I am trying to search out some artwork that will show some larger figures.
Meanwhile I have added a small book to the existing gnome. I had wanted to paint a very small Playboy Logo on the cover of the book the gnome is reading; but my wife said, "absolutely not". I'll post a new photo when done. Thanks to all.....Tom H |

| | Re: Trying new things tom,
great scene i like the one with the gnome sitting, but i also like kenny's idea of have one sitting on top and resting his back on the other. either way it is still a great scene.

| | Re: Trying new things I think I'll call this first one done. Well, wife says I have to replace the book. The next one will involve a pile of stones that are not squared off, and a gnome doing some else. And of course since the mushrooms actually look kinda like mushrooms; they stay. Maybe I'll take one of your suggestions and have gnome peeking around one of several mushrooms. Thanks for all your input and encouragement.

| | Re: Trying new things I kinda' like the juxtaposition of the square rock wall base against the curves and roundness of the mushrooms and it's not a natural "woodland" setting with the man made wall there.I feel too if the gnome were made bigger in proportion to the mushrooms you would loose the magical view of capturing this tiny little guy off guard as he's reading a book or catching a few ZZZ's. It sort of gives you a glimpse into a really small world you would otherwise overlook. Besides,,maybe the rock wall is one he made and these natural size mushrooms are the equivalent to him as one of our trees are to us.It's a Gullivers Travel sort of scene. I like it just the way it is,,makes you think outside convention.Again,,great job.
