| | Triptych I have had to put this job on hold while the dioceses' decided if the church was going to stay or not. Turns out 4 other churches are closing and uniting in the church where this project started out. So it's a go ,,,,again.
It's a triptych that will be just over 18 ft tall when completed, just over 5 ft wide when closed and just about 10 ft wide when the doors are open for display.
I know it's tough to see exactly what is drawn here,,,I've done literally dozens of drawings on primarily tracing papers and it doesn't photograph very well,,,but. In the first shots you'll see the main carcass for the piece. There are two doors where the scene from the garden of Eden will be carved,Adam,Eve,,the tree and the Serpent. Above the doors will be a carving of Light being created,,and breath upon the waters in the triangle shaped area. The columns I designed to be the pivot points for the doors so it can open completly and remain flat.
The second pics are of the clay models I did ( which are floating around this site somewhere) but will be placed on the interior of the doors to view when opened. Two scenes from the Old Testament on the left,,,and two from the New Testament on the right door.
Now once opened in the center will be a 3/4 lifesize Crucifix with a priest and a decon catching the blood and water as so often depicted in old paintings. Also in this area in the background will be the facades of the 4 closed churches as well as a scene from here in Bethlehem as a backdrop.
Also I included a sketch of the triptych along side the canopy I also made for this church as the new piece will mirror the one I already did. More photos are on a second post. There is also a photo of the outline of Adam on the door panels which turned out to be 6 ft tall and 4 ft wide in 2 inch thick basswood. |

| | Re: Triptych ah, have seen the clay models in the gallery, i think, there they will go as carvings, glad the project was not stoped :-) ... neat project this one too, i would like do that too, does not seem to scary to me :-) ...
i wonder how you can carve that huge panel ? i mean you hardly can reach from the border into the middle area when it lies flat for carving (if i judge the sizes correctly) ? or is the wood not yet glued up, and you carve first and then glue together ? |

| | Re: Triptych Thanks Doris, and everyone else. This is two door panels laying side by side,,they are already glued up and they meet with overlap joints to hide the separation . I have carved panels this size before and I would just stand them vertically to carve it. Some areas I can reach while laying flat..some when they stand. Many times too I'm carving the pieces upside down ( not me,,the carving) where I reach down from the top. You don't get a good perspective from that position as to what you're carving,,but it works fine.
