| | Tree Troll in river birch... another happy face! Just got a request for a tree troll like another one that I carved about 10 years ago that someone recalled so at about 8:00 a.m. I was going at it and finished well before lunch!
I went with another smiling face but not "gleaming" happy like the woodspirit that I posted a few days ago. The mouth, straight-on eyes, and the leaves made it a little more complex than your generic woodspirit but it sure was fun working on a tree troll again after way too long!
The "leafy" woodspirits are always popular when I carve them and I believe that I'll start working various versions of them back into my finished stack of stock. The leaves are fairly easy to sketch onto the wood and I also get a lot of ideas from Susan Irishs' patterns in her Greenmen book. Sometimes I just go outside and sketch real leaves too!
When I got done with the tree troll I plowed right into a couple more walking sticks so I'm feeling on top of the world tonight and a 14 mile bicycle ride topped it all off. Wow, what a great day! |

| | Re: Tree Troll in river birch... another happy face! I love his expression! I also love the way the chisel gouges show on the face. Did you dry brush the ridges or did they just take less sealer/stain?
Also, what is the difference between a tree troll and a wood spirit? |

| | Re: Tree Troll in river birch... another happy face! Dave... That's livingroom quality work! What kind of wood is that? With that mottled look the spirit looks like it's a character from "BattleStar Galaxtica!"

| | Re: Tree Troll in river birch... another happy face! I enjoyed seeing this first thing this morning. The leaves add so much, and that expression is so friendly looking. Friendliest troll I've ever seen.
I can appreciate your mention of the bicycle ride. I hiked 10 miles in the mountains 2 days ago, and I'm still sore. It was one way in and one way out, and the last 2 miles were really hard. I feel good about it though. Cleared the mind.
