BullRunBear, I will PM you with some info. Bascially for the bowl, I use a 3/8" flexcut shallow gouge and another knife especially made for carving the bowl part. Will try to find you a link. The Cherry spoon is on the long side of 4.5", inside of bowl is about 1/2" deep and around 2"...about 2 1/8" to the outside at it's widest point.
Be sure and have fun, let the wood speak as to how it should go.

It will be a while since I don't have any cut yet. Rhododendrons do have a few toxins, but it appears that they are in the leaves and flowers. On a Google search I found a 73 page PDF that discusses these toxins in which they discuss using it for turnery. They reported that there was no reaction when working with the wood. There was no suggestion on not using it for food preparation.

I have plenty of basswood and a couple other hardwoods to play with until I get some rhody pruned. Stay tuned.

Kris,

I replied to your PM but a public thanks for the information. The scoops, and their slightly larger sibling,s are just the kind of smallish, hold in the hand project Susan and I look forward to. Gifts for friends, utensils for my use, and the chance to learn a new carving technique: This is great! I have several knives from Pinewood Forge so this gives me an excuse to call them again and plan a trip to Woodcraft.

Well get to it you guys, carving these little scoops was lots of fun for me. Hope you enjoy your efforts as much as I did (I'm still carving on some others). Jeff, I think you are going to enjoy your retirement!
