Default Third project

This is my third project and finished it faster then the first two. Getting use to the wood and knives a little. This is from one of Genes video. So thanks to Gene again.....

Messed up on the eyes and almost threw it away, but decided to finish it anyway. It was hard to see what Gene did to the eyes on his video so I winged it a little. As you can see begginers should step lightly....So maybe when I paint this figure(first time painting) I will figure a way to fix the eyes(if anyone has any suggestion please let me know). Instead of doing the triangle I kinda flatten the space straight against the head, so he has no brows just a flat part then the hair.

Live and learn. Still a little blocky but one step at a time. I'm glad I picked this carving thing up, having alot of fun.

P.S. Gene thanks again for your videos as I stated many times here your a god send. I do not have a jigsaw so the block videos are my favorite. But there aren't any more block videos, I did the bear and this one. So i'm here biting my nails waiting for your next video.......or maybe I should go out and buy one....theres a thought.

I do have a few cut-outs that I purchased but I picked one of them up today and for the life of me I do not know where to start!!! I bought them because I thought it would be easier.....NOT! One step at a time...One step at a time....

I think you are well on your way with the little people, and yes, Gene is a wonderful help. You will refine as you go along. I am just painting my most difficult peice at this moment. I have added the arms and the legs and am quite satisfied. I will be posting it in the next few days it's called Double Amputee, you see, I had carved it with arms and legs but didn't fit the motiff so I hacked them off and started with new pieces and am now satisfied. I've only been carving for 8 months so I'm also still learning. The very best thing you can do is buy one or two of the DVDs that are out there, it's just like being in the same room as the artist and they take you thru step by step, Marg Gargac and Harley Refsal are absolutely the greatest, I have Marks and it is excellent and if your into caricatures then I believe Harleys is the holy grail of them. Good luck, you're doing fine.

the best way to learn to carve is simple-- do it-- 15 minutes a day minimum, tho i cant start and quit that fast. if you look at some of the good carvers and what they did 20 or 30 yrs ago and what they are doing today. you will find many positive changes. find a class and take one- most of us started with caricatures and its a great way to start. santas are always welcome and you can learn lots that way. one of my first pieces is a santa done with harold enlow and its still a favorite. some of my other early pieces i keep hidden -- only to show myself how far i have come.

Nice work on the 3rd. He looks good. I know what you mean on not knowing where to start but if you keep watching Gene on how he tackles a carving... any carving you can kind of get an idea on where to start. Stop cuts are important in roughing out a carving of any kind. Keep making chips!

You're getting good advice I wish I had gotten when I started. If you throw your stuff away because you don't like it, it's difficult to see later what went wrong. Keep up the ggod work and keep carving.

You can tell I have been working too many hours ... Deb is my step daughter and I was talking to her while I was writing this and why I did this .. I do not know ..

Shows I need to rest more ..

Sorry simplyme .. I cant explain this one .. chalk it up to lack of rest and memory .. and a little old age ...

I saw one of Gene's little guys a long time ago and since then 75% of my carving are little guys but not many in flat plane carving I always seem to want to round them more. Anyway Jack Price has a book out Carving Small Characters and most of them are done on a 7/8" by 2" piece of wood. They can be done flat plane if you want. So far this is my favorite carving book and a great tutorial.
