Default Teddy - The Rough Rider!

Here's a sneak peak of the figure I started today. I think this one ought to be fun with the opportunity of lots of detail. More photos on the Blog. Comments always welcome.

This is way to cool Lynn, does your blog tell how to do those sunglasses?

Lynn, that's going to be a great looking figure! I understand what you are saying on the glasses. for you, your figures are always so smooth ... the faces anyway. Do you do a lot of sanding on your figures and if so do you work up through certain grits? Can't wait to see more of this figure.

I do very little sanding. As a final step prior to painting I use a Sand-O-Flex wheel with 320 grit paper to just knock off the sharp edges. This is what gives it the soft look. Here's a link:Sand-O-Flex, Sandpaper – Merit Industries

Lynn, spiffy little fella ya got going there. I realize you always carve your heads separately, in this instance is the hat also carved and then added?

Yes. I like to make my hat brims as thin as possible and the only way to do that and still retain some strength is to reorient the grain.

Here's the head painted. I couldn't to see how he would look. I think he looks great. This is going to be one neat carving even if I do say so myself. If you note the glasses compared to the first photo they seem a little clearer. Believe it or not I polished them on my buffing wheel!!

Great job Lynn.

Caricature carvers seem to possess, in addition to talent, boundless humor and imagination. Yours is certainly proof of that.

Keep on showing, I'll keep on learning.

Lynn, do you normally carve the head first and then the body last? And by the way, you are off to a great start on this one.....Myron

I always carve the head first, an exception being Pillsbury's Best as I wanted to make sure I got that "Bod" just right. Having Teddy's head in front of me shows me what I have to do to match it. As it's a little different in size to my normal figures I'll have to come up with a new pattern for the profile. Another reason is that I haven't really decided on just what I want the figure to be doing. Teddy was known to "Carry a Big Stick", having a "Bear" named after him and always saying the word "Bully". I want to work some of that into the piece to carry the theme of his personality.
