| | Re: start to finish relief carving Ron, it's beautiful! There are three pheasants rising up into the air out of the crossed places in a split rail fence, and another about to take off. The birds and the fence rails have wonderful detail, and at their base is a texture that looks like pine cones clumped together, but I don't know if that's what they are.
The scene behind them is of two fields, one looking like recently plowed rows, and the other has a look of work ahead with a plow waiting there. There is a barn in the background and a farm house. Then, space, with a horizon line that leaves you feeling small. Lots of sky with just the finish on the wood that reminds you that it's not real, but a beautiful relief carving....it has a lovely shine to it in the light color of the wood...basswood I think.
Then it is framed in a beautfully chip carved oblong frame that gently cups the carving with a curved edge instead of an angle. It deceptively large too. I looked in the carvers gallery and he describes it as basswood, 24 inches by 3 feet! wow!
There are pictures of him working on it, bent over on the end of a couch. No work table, just the arm of the couch. First, with a burning tool, then with a small gouge dwarfed by the size of the carving. There is undercutting under the wings of the pheasants that bring them right out of the picture, and the burned parts perfectly compliment with shading where everything falls into place.
Ron, I wish you could feel this one. It's one you would certainly appreciate.

| | Re: start to finish relief carving Colps,
Totally awesome in the progress and finish relief.
So that you know, Ron is our resident Blind carver who has carved some fabulous relief carvings also. Ron was a cabinet maker when he started loosing his eye sight and had some of it up till first of last year.
We try to explain what the piece is on how high, wide, what it is, what it is carved from, colors if any so he can get an idea of what it is we have posted.
Thank you for sharing. |
