Doris, wow, he is finished! You did an excellent job. Yes, there are areas for improvement, but thinking that you just started carving such a short time ago - this is just fantastic. It is important that you can see what you could do or will try to do differently the next time - it will help you find your style and way to express yourself. The "doubts" will probably be there after finishing every piece - out of all of my carvings there is only one on which I would not change anything and which I consider to be perfect, I mean perfect to me. So, do not worry about what you should have done differently, the carving is beautiful as is - just look at your first carvings and you will see how much you have progressed since. We are all looking forward to your new piece.

Doris,

I am laughing!!! I knew that the question will come! It is actually the last one, the Violinist. I am sure that others would find something to change, but for me at this point, I would not change anything - he came out exactly how I wanted him to be. Well, had to do some fixes when he was finished, not carving but painting and I am wondering how soon I will realize that there is something.......as for the rest of my work, there is not another one where I would not want to do something differently. But I guess, this is normal for all of us. I cannot wait to get back to the Cellist - my new studio should be ready by the end of this week - FINALLY!

It is good to hear that you are working on a new project, hope to see pictures of it soon. You sound very excited about it - what is it?

Fred

so nice to know its your last piece, surely makes great feeling for you ... what is it i carve? oh, i am trying to go further from faces, and try carve full figure, and yes, i am excited. i tell more when i start feel comfortable with, clay model helps, but still i feel a little at loss. had this with the faces too, when i carved my firsts, so i am not worried, have image in my head, so carving is fun :-)
i am looking forward to see more images from the cellist. i can so imagine how you wait for new studio really be finished.

Such a great carving Doris! I also agree with Mark,NO artist or carver is totally happy with thier work, even the fast work I do,I study it more afterwards than the time I spent carving or painting it,I see so many mistakes in my work,Ive never done a prefect peice! Butttttttttttttttt Your skills and patience really paid off in this carving.Very nice work Doris! Forrest Tn~

Doris, I am quite new at carving, but I think your work is quite amazing. I do some cabinery and remodeling as a side business and quite often I am not completely pleased with work I have done for clients, even though they have always been very happy with the finished product.

I think one of the hallmarks of being an artist or craftsman is the ability to recover from mistakes and the desire to continually improve. It is a double edged sword...on one hand you want to eliminate any mistakes and continually improve the project, on the other hand you need to complete the project and that can leave you with a feeling that it is not really complete!

As with anything the more you do the better you will become. If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been carving and how frequently do you work at it?

ha this forum is so wonderful ! thank you forrest and ejnelson for so nice encouragemant. i truely appreciate it. and i am glad you like my work...
forrest, you do so many wonderful work, i know you do many very quickly since you said so, but even though, in particular your way to paint the carvigs, shows so much skill and love with the subject, i so love your carvings...
ejnelson, no, i dont mind telling how long i carve... i started may last year, so am carving now almost 18 month :-) i did carve very much the first year, about 50 hours a week or so, by circumstances i cant do this right now, but still i squeeze out as many hours i can... thanks for your kind words.

Wow, 18 months and you are creating wonderful art. I wonder what you'll be creating in a few years! I admire your dedication to put in so much time, I have so many different things going on, I focus on carving but for a few hours a week. I guess that means it will take me many years to reach your skill level!
