Default Spoon rest finished!

My dear friends,

This is a much smaller and simpler project than Thor's gorgeous box. Yet, I spent a bit of time on it because this is the first finished product that gets to stay in my house.

I took Mark's advice in using polyurethane. Instead of using a brush on type, given the details in the scroll, I tried the Minwax WipeOn. It is easy to use and the result seems pretty good (except for your fingers will get all varnished to a smooth finish if you are silly enough to not put gloves on . . . like me).

The feel in your hands is very different than the brush on. Hmm, maybe "intimate" is the word, in comparison to a thicker coat of brush on. It just seems you are closer to the wood when you touch it. Feels more solid than an oil finish as well. It is just perfect for something that has to face the many challenges by tomato sauces, soy sauce, etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions, advice and encouragement.

meipo

Great design, real good carving, and super finish. I'd say a keeper for sure. Those would make super gifts. Tom H

I am so impressed with the smooth lines and finish on this piece. I'm struggling with that very thing on my carvings, and you've made eye-candy with the scroll, and the gentle curves.
The only problem I see is that you're going to let someone put a dirty spoon in it.

Oh, my! You got me all flattered!! Thanks a lot for the compliments. I have had a lot of luck as a carving newbie. I learn most of what I know from you all. If you think I am an ok student, give yourself a pat on the shoulder for me. Seriously.

It is interesting how many of you joking about "letting someone put a dirty spoon on it". Well, if by having this on the stove can lead someone else (other than me, meaning my hubby) to cook more often, I'd be more than happy to carve more stuff for the kitchen. Oh, he makes very very good quiches.

Meipo..excellent work,,I understand completely about getting "intimate" with a piece,,you have to love them into getting done,,and in your piece,, it shows! Very good work!
