| | spoon I'm attempting to carve a spoon. I don't know what kind of wood it is, maybe chinkapin or some kind of oak? It's hard but not terribly hard. Sketched the design on with a sharpie. I used a coping saw to cut the outline. After cutting about a 3rd off I switched to my husbands jigsaw.I like the coping saw better.I'm planning on carving most of the detail in before I shape up the back of it.This is my 2nd attempt at a spoon. The first one is in a basket unfinished,(with several other unfinished projects) until I figure out how to finish it. I usually just start carving, this one I drew the design on it. The top is a butterfly, then leaves.Hope I can stick with the plan, that would be a great achievement for me.LOL..thanks for looking, advice and comments are welcome....sharon |

| | Re: spoon Hi Sharon
Great design, I bet it comes out great. I really like the butterfly on top great idea. The wood kind of looks like mahogany or maple to me. It looks like its going to be pretty big, what are the demensions?
Now get to carving I really want to see it completed.
Mel

Wow! I like the design a lot. The drawing on the wood alone is fantastic. |

| | Re: spoon Thanks Dan, Forrest,Keoma,Mel and Ron for your nice comments and encouragement, and confidence that I can do this.Means a whole lot to me.Forrest, I didn't plant any peas, but how about some nice romano green beans? We have those growing in the garden.Keoma, I think I got the wood up in Trinity Co.8 or9 years ago when my son and husband were hunting. We camped above Ruth Lake. Some guy had a camp trailer set up by us. He wasn't there and had a little sign by his firewood that said "you can take my kindling, but please don't take my firewood".So I grabbed a small armload of it, and left him a few arm loads of the firewood we brought and left him a thankyou note. There was 2 pieces of this wood and some small milled pieces of oak.I figured it would come in handy someday. I think I figured out that this is red alderwood. It's really nice to carve, and it grows all over No. CA coastal zone up into Canada and Alaska.I may give the spoon to my daughter for her 32nd birthday next month. The spoon is about 16" long.Ron, I bet this wood would make some nice sticks. If I can get some branches I'll send you some. Alder is real good wood for smoking and barbecueing, so if I mess it up,Least I can cook something real tasty! |
