Really nice bust that you have there. Now that I've just spent over $100. for a recent shipment of basswood, now it looks like I'll be "chompin' at the bit" until I get some butternut since you've given it such high marks!

Your photography is really top-notch too and I just can't figure out how you seem to have your carving floating in mid air. I know that I'll end up saying, "Well, duhhhh" but I'd love to hear how you make that illusion.

Beautiful carving and photography!

Hello Dave and Merle, thanks for the comments!
Dave: I took the photograph with the carving sitting on a 4x4, and the removed the 4x4 in Paintshop Pro. I also recolored the background some, hehe.
Thanks again!

Kathy, I like Butternutt a lot better! I am used to carving harder woods (driftwood and such) and I don't like basswood so much anymore.
Thanks again!

Hi Gary, I bought a few block of Butternut when I was at the Creede Rendezvous last July. I'm just now getting around to carving something. From what I have roughed out so far I like it too. I've only used my chisels and gouges on it and boy it just cuts so nice. It looks like it will hold detail well.. I also love the color and anything I carve with it will just need Danish Oil and varnish.
