Default Small(ish) Gnome

Here is my major carving accomplishment for this week. My daughter has asked me to bring her a carved gnome when we go to visit her in Minesota next month. this is the third one I have carved, trying to get her the perfect one. This guy is four inches tall, basswood, acrylics. He is the best thus far, but I am still going to work on a better one for her, she deserves the best I can turn out.

I have enjoyed a lot of fantastic carvings this week on the forum, you are a bunch of talented people, and I get a lot of pleasure from this group. Have a wonderful weekend all!!!!!!

Tom...the four inches was the height of the block I started with...it does include the hat, the block was 1.5 inches square. I will make a confesstion....I was going to carve him with his hands around the belt buckle (as I am currently trying to perfect hands as my summer goal), but after I had him roughed out, there didn't seem to be much room for his hands. I stared at him a long time, then got out my ruler and discovered my error. I picked up my templet for a 2 inch little guy and traced aroung that one on the block to aid me in the roughout (I always mark the block and then rough out the head, hat if any, waist, legs and feet as the first step. I had intended to grab the three inh little guy templet to allow space for his hat on this four inch block. I had to tuck his hands in his pockets as I didn't have enough waist to carve decent sied hands. I did, however. learn a good lesson about gnomes from this mistake. On this guy, I think his hat is proportioned just right...if I had made it only one inch high instead of two inches as originally planned, would have been way to short. The one I will start on tomorrow will be from a six inch block, with the gnome being 4 inches high and the hat two inches, I made the templet already and that is a pretty good looking proportion. that gnome will be the largest guy I have carved in a year, so I expect it will allow me much more detail space, hope I am up to the challange.

Nice little gnome. Now you'll need to carve him a gnome home.

Slowmover, the Gnome is really good. You did great on the painting also. I like where you took the picture. Keep it up. You have the knack.

Hi Slowmover,

That looks like a top drawer wee Gnome to me and my guess is your daughter will enjoy him very much.

One question I would like to ask is the acrylics you use bottled and is it a brand you can find at say Michaels? I’ve notice that a lot of you use acrylics on your basswood projects and have been wondering what brands, and tube or liquid.

Anyway, I’m really enjoying surfing around the forums, trying to get acquainted, and marvel at all the talent. Makes a bloke want to jump in for sure.

When you come up north have a safe and blessed trip.
