| | Sketching ideas before carving I was commisiioned to come up with an in the round realistic carving of a indian and a grizzly bear bust This is what I sent my client this afternoon. I am waiting to hear back from him for approval of the design before putting the idea into wood.
A rough sketch of my idea is the second step that I take before doing most of the pieces I carve. The first step , and sometimes the most difficult is coming up with the idea. This carving will be carved from a block of basswood measuring 14"x10"x4", The height will be a little longer then sketched but that will be ok, I will have some extra room at and down around the base to carve a oval type base or work the extra wood into a base of some other desired shape.

(drawing, carved, and then painted). | Thanks Blake for your words of encouragement, I will not be showing every step of the carving process, sometimes that halters the flow. I will post pix. of some of the stages thou, including finishing with stains. |

After looking at the sketch again, the head is a little small and does look more like a wolf than a grizzly,. So I will carve the indian and headress and save this sketch for possible future use. |

Which by the way you have a wonderful imagination and skill to get the job done. Your sculpture will be wonderful and the client will jump for joy. Looking forward to seeing your progress updates.
