Well, since I had made cooking spoons for everyone for Xmas, I realized I hadn't made one for me! The weather was nice today so I was able to get out and get started today. My workshop is outside and as I use "rough" tools, I thought that you might like to see how I go about making a basic spoon. First photo is how I start...with a section of tree that's been split out...this is a maple. Then I shape the quarter with a hatchet to roughly spoon shape and let it dry for a few days if it's green. I tend to start shaping the bowl first as seen in the next 3 photos using only a draw knife. I decided to put a fairly large ball on the end of the handle...feels good in the hand...again doing the majority of the shaping with the draw knife and then switching over to the "small" knife to start working it into shape. If the wood is still a bit on the wet side, then I let it dry for a few more days at this point before going further but this piece has been drying for a few weeks at this point. Tomorrow, if it doesn't rain, I'll finish the shaping, hollow out the bowl and get it ready to sand...more pics to come! |

Nice job on the spoon. You kicked up some memories with your kitchen scepter. Whenever we got out of line my Mom just had to reach for the wooden spoon. Don't remember even getting hit but the sight of it was enough to get my respect. Mom certainly ruled the kitchen. Bill K. |

Very nice, Ken. It indeed looks like a scepter. Thanks for sharing the finished product.

Nice spoon. The more spoons I see, the more I would like one. I already have some spoons I bought, but none that I carved myself. And you made me realize that I would love to have a bigger end with some kind of carving to stop me from dropping the spoon... Well, it's not that bad, but I needed a reason to carve one ![]() And your design showed me that it doesn't have to be complicated to be nice. Gilles |

Nice spoon! I like the balled end on it. My Grandmother had a 'law' spoon. She'd say.. " do I need to get the law out"... big old wooden spoon. The chili wont stain the spoon? Marcia. |
