I had shown photos of the start of this shell from this morning on another post titled "Bob D's bracket",along with some other shells I have done. I finished the shell this evening and thought you would like to see it completed.A bit more finishing and I'll deliver it Fri .afternoon.

beautiful, mark. they look "rich" and playful. very nice design... i enjoyed looking the other shells you showed too. its nice to see how small variations of a theme make completely different feeling... thanks for sharing

I was impressed with the first photo, but I am awed after seeing how small the carving is in the second photo. All that precision in such a small space is mind-boggling.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.I really enjoy doing these types of things that can be used in so many places.This is really a variation of the "greenman " I did.I always thought these acanthus leaves added a look of style and elegance to an ornament.They are also so useful because you can twist and turn them in so many ways to expand enough to fill spaces quickly,and still have a graceful ,fluid way of doing it.For some reason though this one in the pictures looks a bit "chunky" though it actually looks quite delicate in person.Glad you liked it,,customer did too.

Thanks for showing that Mark. I can really appreciate the layered elements that still stay so fluid. The tape measure gave it another point of appreciation as well. I didn't think it was that small.

Yup,,just a little one,fun and quick.It still amazes me how much can happen in only a half inch of wood.Your observation of the layers is what makes it happen,you don't need inches of wood to be able to pull out a decent relief as most might imagine. Those who know me,know my "coin" story. Also I believe,if you control the layers effectively the look is "tighter" and more harmonious without that layers of shingles look you get if you try deep depths,as if chunks of wood were just added on top of each other in the effort to achieve the appearance of depth,they only look chunky in my estimation,doesn't have to happen.I keep thinking of all the great reliefs I have seen that look like they're a foot thick,, and it was done in only an inch or so. As an example,,on the other post where I have other shells,,the one sitting on top of the door frame with the scrolls off each side,,not including the center part,,the shell itself is only a bit over an inch and a quarter thick,,I think that one looks fairly deep,,the rest of it is only 3/4 inch thick,,fun stuff eh?

Mark, Great looking piece, love all the movement in the wood, not a straight line anywhere, looks just like it was created by mother nature herself, well done. Bill
