Default Shawn Cipa

Hello all,
before Christmas I carved Shawn Cipa's treetop angel that was in Wood Carving Illustrated. What fun that was and decided then and there I was going to start carving his set of Mythical creatures in his Carving Fantasy & Legend book. Attached(hopefully) is the first, the Dragon. It was as much fun as the angel. I really enjoy his designs and look forward to his other presentations. Get-r-done Shawn but do a good job of healing first.

Really nice job. I have that book and I am planning to carve this soon too. I am a pretty new carver though (just a few spirit faces on sticks and bark, and a cypress knee character), so this may be a bit tricky for a newbie. What do you think?

chuckt,
I started carving last year. The Dragon was fun and I thought not very hard if I took my time and thought it thru first, as Mr. Cipa suggests in his book. I'm working the Unicorn now and it is harder because of the many curves with and across grain. I plan on painting all them when I get finished.

Great job! Bet you had fun with this!

Shawn's books are fantastic for newbies as well as intermediate carvers. They're simplistic enough for a new carver, but plenty of room to add details for the more advanced carver.

Great looking piece. You detailed his face very well...as well as the rest of him. Make sure you post the unicorn. I hope to get into fantacy creatures myself soon.
