was written and illustrated by a local man and has been fairly successful.Through a mutual friend, the authors wife asked if I would consider carving one of the trolls from the book as a special gift from her to her husband. Naturally the troll she chose was one of the ugliest and most complex in the book <grin> Well, I tried and the attached snaps are what I have so far. The picture in the background is all I had to work from and as I have difficulty in drawing stick figures you can imagine the fun I had coming up with a pattern. Shapeless (his name from the book) is carved from a single piece of Huon Pine and stands 8 inches high. I hope to have him finished and mounted on a base in the next day or two, will post more pics at that time.......Thanks for looking. John

Very nice carving your friend should be real happy with it. That is how I imagined trolls to look like. I really enjoyed your Troll and looking forward to finished piece.

Nice work, John! Are you going to add horns to match the one in the book? Claude |

That is a really ugly troll...but a beautiful carving. You did a great job in making one that looks like the illustration, a task I would tremble in fear at undertaking. Outstanding work.

Robert, many thanks for taking time to look and comment...glad you like him. Claude, he has one horn coiled against his head, I have yet to fit the broken stump on the other side. Thanks for looking. SM Thankyou! that is a great compliment, my fear was that he would not closely match the picture, you have relieved my mind. Jared, Glad you enjoyed him, the Huon pine increases its girth by only 2mm each year which gives it an incredibly tight grain structure. They are ultra slow growing and trees have been aged at 4 thousand years and the timber does not rot in water. http://www.answersingenesis.org/creation/v17/i3/living_tree.asp Kris, Thanks for checking him out, and I really hope he will be seen as special by the recipient

I really like that troll John. I have been on the look out for troll books or anything with monsters, demons or other scary characters. Of the trolls I've seen carved, that one stands out as a style I really like. Thanks for giving us a look. Patrick |
