This carving is about 75 percent compleated. Carved from a solid block of basswood that measured 14"x5"x4. I have 12 hours into this carving at this stage. I figure , estimated time about another 5 hours to go , including finishing. There will be some add - on's, I am still kicking around a few ideas. I feel cluttering the piece would be a mistake and possibily impede movement. The nice thing about trappings are you can carve them by the tube,( my wife likes that ) and see what will work on the carving at a latter time. I plan on putting the Santa on a 7"x5"x3" basswood base, which will have some detailed relief carving on it, well there goes my estimated time of 5 hours to completion, add another 2 approx. HEY!, any one out there reading this will you help me think up a title for this carving? If this helps any, I plan on adding eyes and rain deer antlers to the big fuzzy sleepers and painting his long johns sky blue with off white stars scattered about. Thanks, Mark

Beautiful creation Mark, love the idea. Splendid job carving, the face is spectacular. The idea of the long johns is great too, very creative work. Call it: "Reindeer make such a racket. Prancer, pipe down and leave Dasher alone! Rudolph, turn out your nose and go to bed!?" Bob

Great carving I absolutly love him he really has a nice flow. As for a name it is hard to do that for someone elses carving. What came to mind when I saw him was I thought he belonged on Ellis Island and with those long johns I would probably come up with something like "Statue of Santa" he has that pose of the "Statue of Liberty". Never the less an excellent carving what ever you call himI cant wait to see the finished carving. ColinThumbs Up

Really nice carving. Can't believe how fast some of the folks on here carve. It would take me a couple of weeks, at least, to progress as far as you have, and still have a long time to finish. Probably do better if I'd stay off this computer. Again, a really nice Santa carving. Garon |

He does look a little haggard. But That is an awsome pose and expression. Notice that the left hand will be added later or is it the way the picture is. Maybe a bottle of Jim Beam or Jack Dainels would help him. Red Face

Good job Mark! You just keep getting better and better. I think Wood Carving Illustrated should do an article about you. Don Arnett P.S. My wife Karen likes the title "...and to all a good night" Last edited by Don by the lake; 11-13-2005 at 08:50 AM. |

He's so real. His face and beard are so well done, and those fuzzy slippers! I hope you'll post a detail image of those as you progress. Thanks for showing it to us in this stage. Love the PJ's. Thor |
