| | samples are done Here are the samples finished. I left one a bit chiseled and cruder looking ( the architects) as they wanted a contrast of styles and so it looks a bit rougher and unfinished. And the one I designed I finessed a bit more. I showed them from two views as they read differently as you flip them around. I'm sure I'll keep playing with them and poking around here and there,,but I'm basically happy with how they came out.As a point of interest,,there is absolutely no undercutting at all on either of these. All perfectly vertical sides.
Hope you like them too. |

| | Re: samples are done I think your design is a whole lot more interesting, Mark! The architect's design looks sort of "ho hum"...

| | Re: samples are done Mark, very beautiful carvings and very quick I will add. I guess this chip carver will have to give acanthus carving another try. Thanks for sharing!

| | Re: samples are done i agree here with carver rog, very beautiful, and quickly done... by far, my favourite is the acanthus, and i love how you made it same interesting from both sides, by showing on either side front and back of the leaves in the two scrolls. also neat addition is the angled corner, which you not have done on the architect design...i am amazed how nice that one turned out too, from the drawings i had not thought so, but still it is boring compared to your design, since the eye is not leaded around nicely to explore...
thanks for sharing, mark, really love them...gave me an idea i am chewing on.... |

| | Re: samples are done Thank you everyone! I can only hope these go over as well with the clients and that they share your views.
Yes Claude,,I like my design better as well. But even though the architects might by comparison look ho-hum,,that is what it should look like. In the recent discussions on Critiquing,,here would be a possible problem. Though it might not look as impressive as the other,,and you know it isn't as fancy as you know I might be able to carve it..it is just what the design called for. Could I have carved it better,,and should I? Should I ignore what the design calls for and add my own particular flourishes that might improve it,,or do what others feel would help it? Is it a good or bad carving? It's neither,,it is what it is supposed to be. Just sort of ho-hum,,,and that's only because of a direct comparison. On it's own,,in the right setting,,it will look just fine.
I may be misreading the comments,,but these are only two designs. Though there are four pics,,they are the same two only inverted.I didn't carve the back sides,,only the front of the board, the back is still flat. I just photographed them right side up and upside down,,if there is a actual up or down side!
These might seem pretty quick,,three days,,but once you have a feel for doing these things they do go quick ( seems like forever to me) . I lost one entire day working this week by getting a boom truck and a 14 inch chipper to take down what was really two huge Mulberry trees. And having a skidder come in and remove a 36" stump. So I was still working with wood,,one day I carve it,,the next I'm shredding it and filling dump trucks. |

| | Re: samples are done Mark, I like both carvings but your's feels more natural due to the leaves flowing out onto the frame. A much more natural and pleasing look. Thanks again!

| | Re: samples are done You bet Roger,,I'm glad my efforts weren't in vain,,the details are important and you have noticed them,,thank you. It also mean a lot to me that you find it "natural and pleasing",,,THAT says so much! It means there isn't any tension in the piece,,there is a harmony that I tried to achieve and apparently had some success in finding it. Again,,your observations mean more than you realize to me. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
