Default Runs With Coyote WIP

Runs With Coyote WIP
9" Tall 4" Across Cottonwood Limb Squared (carved on the corner)
Time to carve something on some good old cottonwood. Decided on an Indian theme for this one, using a lot I have learn from Mark Gargac. The cottonwood is challenging as it's not as safe as basswood. It seems to have little surprises to throw at you, such as soft spots and flaking. But, all in all even though it's challenging it's also rewarding when it works for you. At this point I don't think I will paint this one, but rather leave the natural color. I may do some woodburning on the coyote pelt and buffalo robe.
I decided to use the sketch on the right for the carving. I will update as I get a little further along.
Thank you for looking,
Kathy

Hi Gene & Merle, thank you both for your nice compliment. This one will be my biggest challenge so far. Not only my novice carving ability, but the cottonwood is a task master when it comes to detail (for me anyway).
(Big Grin) Merle, good to get that devil out, don't want to keep him inside ya! LOL
Will update soon,
Kathy

I go back to carving Native Indians on occasion as they force you to really look at facial features. Even early into your carving and you can definitely see characteristics of that population. Look forward to seeing your completed project.

Hi Patrick, thank you, I'm very please this piece is taking on the Indian facial characteristics. I looked at a lot of Indian images to compile my sketches. I have squared the jaw a bit since this I posted, added some wrinkles and feel it made an improvement. I hope I can complete my vision of what I want this carving to say or portray. I'll update after I get the eyes completed.
Kathy

Thank you, Skip
Kathy

RUNS WITH COYOTE UPDATE

Making progress, I have to laugh because my coyote headdress is looking more like a mouse headdress. May have to change the name to 'Runs With Mouse' or 'Runs With Rat'. LOL This is my first non-bearded mountain man and lips are not that easy for me anyway. Practice, Practice....The braids will be banded and I have the indications of the divisions.
Back to the work table, as always I appreciate you looking and commenting.
