| | Quick whittled giveaways Having found myself sittin in waiting rooms way too much lately, I decided to use that time better. Several of the waiting rooms had kids in them that were getting antsy, so I just pulled out some scrap wood and started whittlin. Did these and similar Gnomes. Gave some away immediately to the kids, and painted the rest to be given away between now and Christmas. I continue to prove how much fun it is to do quick stuff and give it to kids, or others. Tom H

| | Re: Quick whittled giveaways While you're in a giving mood how about giving a short tutorial on doing these with a pocket knife?
Though I am a wanna-be woodcarver I am really only barely a whittler.
Any simple project that I can do with a pocket knife keeps me from feeling totally lost when I go to pick up the gouges...
Thanks in advance,

What brand/make knife were you using? (I recently picked up a double-cross while in Wyoming and it has a wonderful warncliffe blade I like to use.) |

| | Re: Quick whittled giveaways I think that I like your expert arrangement of the little gnomes as much, if not more, than the actual gnomes themselves! Such a quaint group of fella's with some just barely poking an eye out of a hidden "hole" in the pose. That picture left me rolling in laughter, almost outta the chair!
Great work too in finding an opportunity to capture the imagination of a child. Those short missions of kindness go a lot further than most of us imagine. Also, the size of the project was just right for a waiting room and a magazine or half a newspaper can catch all the shavings nice and neatly... I know because I've done quite a bit of waiting room carving myself. Prior to 9-11 I regularly carved when traveling on commercial airlines and generated a lot of good conversations while sipping coffee at 30,000 feet. Sure do miss those days!
