Smile putto - wip

hello everybody... so far, i have mainly done one project at a time, but i learned with the flower panel also, that i actually love to have two projects going on, in very different stages ... and that made me starting this little putto... the pictures show, this time i saw out the design with my fretsaw, and started roughing out. it is still in the very early roughing out stage, but you can already see that it will be a little naked boy, which is sitting on a thick cushion (or rather a fat blanket, dont know english word for that), and the boy is trying to put on a cardinals hat ... the relief will be cut on a wood 2.5cm=1'' thick... which is plenty ...
the design is after a putto carved by the german rokoko (or late baroque) carver ignaz guenther and is in a church in rott am inn, unfortunuately i only have a single reference picture, namely a postcard. to help me out, i also look pictures of other putto of ignaz guenther, and also of little chubby boys, in the age of about 3-4, which i think the original putto is... with these references i hope to be able to get my idea carved into the wood ...
i hope you will enjoy this one too, for me its big fun carving :-)

Well Doris, you are really going to have to work very hard to make this one any where nearly as good as the old woman because she is so fantastic. Good luck, I'm sure it will be a beauty as well. I have never heard of a Putto so I will watch as you go along to see what comes out.

Hi Doris,

Wonderful subject and great start. Please just don't tell me you started it yesterday. It would take me a month to get that far.

cliff, maybe i used a wrong translation (?), anyway, a putto is, here in europe, find in old churches, and in castles, but today some people have them in their garden too (sigh). they were very popular in renaissance and later in baroque and rokoko time too. they are little naked boys (only very few girls i know of), with or without wings (so little angels rather) and doing all sort of funny things, jokes... most of the time it is very amusing to see what they do, and their expression on face...oh, and they are often on paintings too...
yes, alice, i only realised now that i like working two at a time. did not liked that in my profession, there i needed do one finish before i start new one...
no, ron, not started yesterday, there are several days in already, but cannot tell how many really, i immediately forget time, once i start carving...

Doris, I have been admiring your work since you came to the site. But please slow down, your making me feel lazy. It seems like everytime I log in, you have another really cool project your working on. Great work (even if you are putting me to shame)

hi lorax :-) ah, i cannot slow down, something is driving me ... ;-)...but donīt feel lazy, everyone has different pace, just do happy carving :-)

update :-) ... worked mainly on his face, basic structures, and first try to get expression...and body, redid the legs (mainly his left), and worked on the hat. i am amazed how much depth i seem to need to make that readible as hat. would rather like have that depth for his face...well, still wood there, so i can push things down a little more ... made first efforts to define where and how the hands should be placed, admittedly they look very odd right now, but i think will go ...

Good job! Doris, that carefree attitude is already coming out. It is interesting how even in the intermediate stage you are showing us that light carefree heartedness. Cute idea for a garden. Brian D

yes, brian, carefree is what i want show :-) glad you see it already :-)
hi kathy, glad you not missed the thread. shoulld be fun watching :-) ...

next update :-) ... oh, i learned that i used wrong word, so, what i am carving is called in english cherub (so, see cliff, it was my fault you never have heard of it... ;-) )...
so, what did i do now on my little cherub ? mainly his face, the hat, and his hands (sorry, the foto is hard to see, i forgot again to put an extra lamp to produce better shadows...will try think of it next time...)... i have carved down now in places almost to the bottom, so that is the depth i now have. i have pushed his face, and the lower rim of the hat much further down, and now i think this will do :-) ... oh, yes, i redid his right knee too, it was placed way too low, since i misinterpreted some of his fatty parts ;-) ... ok, thatīs for today, and as the roughout is mostly completed, and i can see him now in the wood, i will from now on try carve cleanly ... hopefully .... lol...
