Progress Report - Child's Walking Stick

Hi Everyone!

Okay, here is the walking stick that I'm making for niece for Christmas carved and painted. I'm thinking about putting some stones in the "hat" - what do you think? Would this add to the stick?

Depends on what kinda stones. Diamaonds, rubies and saphires might look nice.

Yep, that's one cool stick.....I don't quite get the concept of the rocks in the hat, but.....hey, whatever!

What I'm thinking of with the stones are I have some oval cut stones that have been polished that I would embed into the "hat" to create additional interest. They would be inset in the same manner as you would put in glass eyes for birds. Of course I could simply be going over the top on that idea. Red Face

Wow, did I read that wrong! I thought you figured on hollowing out the top of the hat and filling it with stones (rocks)......maybe like "dumber than a box o' rocks"????? or " a hatfull o' hunkers"???

Your inserted "jewel stones" sounds like a neat idea. I'd vote for it.

I am assuming you expect it to be either a playtime staff or a functioal walking stick. I do agree that inlaying a few of the fake gem stones into the crown would indeed be very nice for the art of the staff, I think that the playtime and use fuction could well cause that to be a bit of a problem.

Depening on the age of your niece and the size of the staff without the stones the staff could be used for a much longer period of time as she grows and would not be so storybooked as with the stones.

Also the abuse that the staff would take as a playtime item , it would be quite likely that the stones would be damaged or dislodged from the dropping it which is bound to happen, when using it as a toy.

I would not add the stones, unless you think it would be a piece that would be well taken care of.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have decided not to put the oval cut stones in and just wood burn in her name and sign the stick.
