Re: Prodigal Son part 2 Thank you everyone for your kind words. I can't take all the credit for this,,I only carved them,,Rembrandt left a great painting for me to follow.
Doris, you are right about the design in the folds.Seeing them together it does resemble the Holy Spirit. But it is just the way I interpreted the clasps on the back of his robe. Looks pretty much like the painting,,guess it just happened that way.
There will be a carving of a dove decending in the upper corner with 7 rays of light shining from it ,,with part of a tree filling out the other corner as the frame work is completed to finish these things. And as I originally said I'm getting a milky white sign acrylic to back them so the lighting shines through the images I've carved. Right now it's difficult to photograph them back lit,,but the effect is really neat.
Lonnie,,the wood is African Mahogany. It's been a bit of a challenge to carve,,,not like "real" mahogany. No consistency to the grain. I've since picked up three other species of wood from Africa for another project which I'll be posting soon. One is called African Walnut,,the other is Sapele (SP?) and the third I can't even pronounce let alone spell. But these seem terrific just doing a bit of doodling with them to see how they respond to chisels.
I'll be using them to carve 10 panels depicting a variety of big game trophies that will wrap around two fireplaces at a private hunting lodge. The owners are avid hunters and go to Africa often so I thought using wood from that country would be sort of neat. Well,,,makes sense to me anyway,,more interesting than using basswood for example,,plus they stain much better.
Well, though I haven't been posting that much,,I haven't lost my gift (curse ?) of gab..LOL
Thank you again to everyone,,,
