Default Prodigal Son installed

I've been meaning to post these shots for some time before I totally forget about the pics and the job. Too many things going on.

The first pic is of the panels in my shop before delivery. The second shows the overall piece mounted on the door. I hollowed out the door to hold flourescent lighting to back light these pieces. That's sign acrylic you see backing the carvings so light can pass through. The next two are top and bottom close ups and the final is an overall pic of the installation.

I had taken some pictures of the panels light up but they were dark overall with hot spots,,,I guess the camera couldn't figure out how to balance the color temperatures. But it does look really neat and the panels worked out well.

They ended up just under 6 ft tall,,2 ft wide and one inch thick.

Mark,

Thank you for taking the time to detail all of these projects, photographs and all.
To be able to see the work of a twenty-first century professional woodcarver from start to finish is really a rare privilege I think...and very inspiring.
Thanks again.

The works themselves leave me speechless...again. :-)

RussL.

Thumbs up Re: Prodigal Son installed

Mark .. It is beautiful .. just beautiful .. something of beauty that will be enjoyed even when we are no longer here ..

I know the photos dont do it justice .. in person .. it would be special to see ..

I cant imagine the work and skill that it took to create this scene .. but you can see the craftmanship all over it ...

You have truly mastered this kind of beauty ..

Gene

these really turned out nice, and i am so glad you shared with us how they look installed. after having seen the wips i had get correct idea on how the light would play, but having been only inside european churches, i had a completely wrong imagination on how the doors and their surrounding would look. ah, that is beautiful, they integrate so harmoniously :-). ... in this one i admire particulary the finish, it has a strong sheen, but no disturbing glossy reflection , how did you do that ? thanks so much for sharing, mark :-)

edit : coming back to look pictures again, i think, the little square window begs now for some small decoration too ...

Thanks again Doris. This particular church isn't particularly ornate,,,especially in this area. The doors do blend nicely I think without being too much. I kept the design and application clean and simple. I think if I had done an ornate molding and things like that it wouldn't have looked very good here.

The finish does appear quite glossy. Some of that is because of the flash and the lighting that the camera picks up. I personally do not like high gloss finishes as a rule. They generally do not compliment carvings and make them difficult to see and read well. On this piece I used laquer,,thinned quite a bit,,in maybe 4 coats or so. If pieces do become too glossy I'll kill the shine with a 3M type pad then follow up with a compound or wax to re-establish a soft sheen instead of seeing harsh glossy reflections.

Yes,,,those little windows had been air vents,,but didn't allow privacy so they blocked them off with some paneling. So much for going into a confessional and having the entire congregation listen to your confessions!
