Smile Power Carved walking stick

Got restless this evening, had nothing to work on in the house, so went out and started a walking stick. I cheated and used the power tools almost entirely. Carved a feather on the stick also. Decided it might look better painted. Couple coats of laquer, and a strap, and it should be ready to go. Monkey

Hugh, It's only 8:18 PM where I am EST. You started and finished the stick "this evening". Power tool or not that's fast, real fast. Going to be a nice stick too. And it's not cheating! Tom H

The Bird man did a great job on the stick.

Great stick Hugh....I love the feather!!! Your bird painting and carving skills really helped out on that one! Great walking stick.

Well I said cheating because I've been trying to learn to use a knife and chisel since joining this forum. They just don't work right for me, but will keep trying. I can work at a spirit face for a couple hrs with the knife and chisel, and still not be finished. With the power tools, it takes me about 30 minutes. The feathers, I have done so many over the last 20 yrs, that they don't take too long.

If you didn't tell us, I'd swear you stuck a real feather onto your walking stick - very realistic...and nice job on the little wood spirit.

That feather is esqusite! I'm going to have some research done and find an assortment of hawk, eagle, and osprey feathers for examples: so many raptors: red legged hawks, sharp shinned hawk, rough legged hawk, Merlyn, American Kestrel, Gosshawk, Perigrine Falcon, Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, ......I'm going to need to find sample feathers from each Any ideas where?

Bob

I have a feeling more cane orders will be arriving. I'd like to have a selection of all those hawks on canes, and be able to show customers what a cane head for an eagle looks like, or a Peregrine Falcon or so on ........... etc.

Hi Bob, I've collected all sorts of feathers over the years, and there is a wide variety of patterns. The only two that sell well for me is the Grouse and the Red Tail Hawk. Oh yes, the Raven feather will sell. The sticks are worth doing a few ahead. Mine sold out and have been trying to get a few more ready to display. If you want reference to make your heads from, get stillers patterns , I think he makes small size patterns. As far as reference, there are lots of photos on the internet.

Great Stick Hugh. I see you have added a feather since I was there the other day. Can't leave well enough alone eh? LOL Great addition, I have a few of Hugh's feathers and everyone that sees them are alway amazed when I tell them they are carved. Great Job again Cousin

Hugh....Floyd Schlutz's book, Birds of Prey has lots of good photos to do my own patterns from, I never bother with patterns or blanks. A good photo is usually enough to sketch from.
