Just started this little guy yesterday from a round of Pine that I picked up from the sidewalk. He stands about 14" tall and would probably be about 7"-8" deep. I have had a few problems with his gut because of my lack of experience and tools. I started carving at the beginning of this year. I am enjoying the process immensely and this site is a great help. I don't think I would have started with carving from blocks if I hadn't come across all the helpful hints and pictures in this site. I think he looks a little like Knut the Berlin Bear. Any suggestions for the eyes and nose when he gets to that stage? (The blacking I mean) IMG_0254.jpg |

You have done a good job on the overall shape, I carve the nose mouth and eyes then tint the wood dark. The last thing I carved before I left for Iraq was a walking bear its on a thread I started "walking bear"

Hmm. Lo and behold, what I thought was a round of Pine now appears to be Victorian Ash. Still not 100%, but certainly not Pine. Amazing what you discover in found wood.
