As an after thought to my recent article in Woodcarving Illustrated, I thot that I would share a more advanced version of what I call Whimsey Art and the Magazine calls Wood Whimseys. This is a somewhat ambitious undertaking. I have taken the letters of POKER and will connect them with wooden chains. Each chain will have imbeded in it one of four card suits. Before starting on this undertaking, I experimented with how difficult it would be to imbed the four card suits in links. I have attached my experiments, or prototypes. The layout and scroll sawing took about 6 hours. I have also shown the 1/4" x 1/4" splines that I inserted behind the E. These fingers of the E are all end grain and without the spline would break off during carving or normal handling. It is my intention to give you periodic up dates as this project progresses. Because of adding the suits to the links, the total length of the links with the suit is 4" -- so the distance between the letters is 4 1/2". The letters are about 6" in height. I found that I could only attach 5 attachments, so I will attach the final attachment in a separate posting -- that's a lot of attach (s). I hope you enjoy the trip with me. Roy |

That is just too cool! I would be afraid of getting 90% done and breaking it! Thanks, James |

I even like the experiments! I have a friend who is big into Black Jack, so I might have to give something a try. Joggernot

Thot that I'd update on the carving of the Whimsey of POKER. Attached are Front and Back after defining the links through carving and routing and some carving on the card suits and martini glass.

I have roughed out the front of the letters. From here is the rough out of the back of the letters, sanding both sides, then attacking the release of the links. roy |

Wow, I'm impressed. I thought the article was tremendous, and now to see it taken to another level is very cool. Thanks for showing them to us. |
