| | picture frame I had posted a shot of this before,,I think,,anyway now that I am done with the castings (thought they'd never end) I can now start thinking of the rest of the jobs piling up.My client salvaged this from a church where it was glued on to a wall (many icons are done that way) . I had to send it out for restoration since it was deteriorating, paint missing,,gilding flaked off after someone had rolled it up too tightly, and had them remount it on a stable ply.I am also including the idea I had for the carved frame I plan on.I want it to look as though the painting is being unveiled. The carved cloth, with tiebacks and tassels will be finished to match the robe in the painting,,though you will still be able to see that it's wood,,not a solid paint job. The rest of the frame will be done in an egg and dart or leaf on leaf design as a regular frame would be,,and the bottom will be a sort of shelf with a cove moulding and egg and dart below. The cloth will appear to hang from an actual brass rod that will go through holes bored through the wood before I carve it.It seems to me to be an interesting resolution to an odd shaped frame,,this will still show it,,and have an interest to it without hiding all the neat curves. It's currently 4 ft x 7ft.but I will trim it to leave a bit of the red outline, and still follow the profile of the piece..it's gonna' be a fun one. |

| | Re: picture frame I hope you'll keep us posted with pictures so we can see how on earth you approach a project like that.
That is a gorgeous icon.
Do I understand that your intend on making the drapes match the red robe she is wearing? That would be so rich looking.

| | Re: picture frame Yes, you're exactly right,,I plan to have the curtain pick up that same color as well as mimic the flow of her robe..the ends of my curtain will have the same design as the one on her blue robe including the little jewels and tasseled ends. The brass of the rod will compliment the gold halo's and I might even pick up some gold in finishing the egg and dart or whatever design I choose,,the mahogany frame will look good with a bit of golden trim as an accent I think and serve to balance the look of the whole piece,,without anything dominating one area,,,sound like a plan? Somehow it makes sense to me,,the sketch is rough,,but I hope you got the idea,,and sure,,I'll post picks if you want. |

| | Re: picture frame I will ,,thanks for the votes of confidence,,It might seem like something,,but it should really be quite straight forward,,as I said before ,, I like to carve cloth,,and mounting it essentially on this rod,,the wood will be allowed to move and float over the rod keeping it from wanting to crack and force the piece apart.I've been thinking too ,,it might be neat to carve some brackets to make it appear as if the rod is really being held by wall brackets supporting the whole drapery ,,, we'll see ,, |
