This piece is a special gift to a talented photographer, Brian Atkinson, of Fredericton , NB, and author of a book that was just released, "MIRAMICHI, RIVER OF CHARACTER". I am one of the subjects of the book and his photography was "Outstanding". and made my ships shine in print! He took quite a shine to my dragons while he was here at the house shooting for the book , so I deceided to thank him by creating this piece for him. I hope he likes it. It is carved in Butternut wood, and is about 10" long x 7" high. I love being able to create unusual gifts for special friends. Bob

Bob, I can see why he was interested in your dragon! Is he all one piece, except the camera of course. How did you make the scales? I have toyed with making a dragon and yours has really got me thinking. Thanks so much for sharing it. Wanda

The dragon is made up of several pieces: arms, legs, tail, body and camera. Only area that has paint is the camera, all the rest is carved and burned, (shaded or edged defined). The scales are carved by hand (edged tools), stop cut around the scale, then relieve the material just below the edge of each scale to give the effect of overlapping, then round the edge and body of the scale slightly to give them a convex individual shape. Finally the scales are shaded and the edges burned to help define them clearly. There are a lot of scales but the effort is certainly worth it. Bob

That is a very nice dragon photographer. The scales are well done. I've been interested in carving a dragon for a good friend and your dragons are inspiration to me. I hope to do one tenth as well. Ed
