| | Re: Peregrine Falcon Your peregrine is looking pretty darn good. I do have a couple of comments. The first is the bill. Peregrines have a long, pointy, narrow beak. The second is more in the way of a suggestion for you to try rather than a critique. Since you are burning the “hard” or flight feathers, you might try stoning the breast feathers to give them a softer look. I am in the process of carving a peregrine also. But, yours is much further along than is mine. If you have not found the reference book by Denny Rogers, there is excellent information about the Peregrines in there. Please keep posting progress pics. |

| | Re: Peregrine Falcon Thanks Paul, your comments are greatly appreciated, I did purchase Denny Rogers' book also Floyd Sholuz, Birds of Prey, both are extremelly wealthy with information. This was my first attempt on any bird of prey. I will follow your suggestions on the bird I'm working on next.

| | Re: Peregrine Falcon Hey there Oscar, a young fella like me shouldn't even bother writing an old guy like you, heck, I wasn't born till Jan 9 1931 so you've sure got the life experiences that I have still to learn. I like your falcon carving by the way. Nice to meet another junior carver like yerself.

| | Re: Peregrine Falcon Yea Cliff, thanks for the imput, well now, you know that I have to keep you youngters in line every now and again. About fifteen years back the wife and I ran away from sunny California. We always wanted to live in an area where
there is snow on Xmas, well we moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon where it is even snowing now. After 15 years, I got tired of shoveling the snow from my driveway, so here we are in Southern California where they declare a rainny day a holiday trouble is it hardly ever rains. Are you a real "Canuck" or just transplanted from the states, anyway you seem like a nice kid. ![004[1]1](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/004[1]1.gif) carving trail partner

| | Re: Peregrine Falcon Torpidhummer, Good to see you getting your feet wet in birds of prey!! I wish I had my Peregrine back from the breeder as you could come on over and bring your camera. Remember the personality of the bird is in the head and there feathers have a smooth appearence. From what I can see, the head shape is alittle off. If you look down on the head from the top of the head you should see a triangle from the tip of the beak to the back of the head each side being a corner. Also, make sure you really define the feather groups as they are distinct. The eyes have a small brow ridge over the eye with the fleshy membrane that goes most of the way around the eye and has a distinct shape. Above all else, take your time!! When doing the beak I always use a flame shaped diamond on my highspeed grinder. I also use this bit to get around the eyes as well. It allows me to get into tight places as well as take large amounts of wood as well. Semper Fi!!! Welcome to Sierra Creek Studios |
