Default Parks Dove WIP

I posted on another thread that I have started carving Hugh's dove from the latest issue of WCI. Here is a photo of my progress. I used a piece of tupelo that my grand daughter had decided to practice on with a gouge. At first, I was a little put out with her as tupelo is hard to find around here. But, it worked out well as the tupelo (I put the rest of it away) is much better for power carving than is basswood. I did a mirror image of the pattern because of the gouge marks that had been cut quite deep.

Hey Paul, he's really lookin good. I glanced at the article and said to myself "self, that's too difficult for you" well sir, after seeing your work, I think I'll have to reconsider, thanks for taking us along as you work.

Thumbs up Re: Parks Dove WIP

Great work Paul looks like it's going good, Ya know I was looking for a certain piece of wood once and when I found it I found it had the corners cut off and was all gouged up..... then I remembered I did that Head Bange.
I will be watching as it progresses.

Cliff, you're way too modest. After some of the carvings you've posted, this one will be easy for you.

Hugh, I meant to thank you for your design and the article that lead to my carving this ornament. It is going a lot faster than I had anticipated.

The hardest thing for a bird carver is to carve an ornament and not a realistic piece. I keep thinking primaries, secondaries, coverts, feet.....then I remember what I am doing.

So I try to step back and make a good ornament by thinking, what will the recipient (who probably knows little of bird anatomy) think makes it worth having. Good thing I have a big eraser and am keeping your article right on the work table!

Your doing a great job Paul, and my feelings on making an ornament are much the same, thanks for posting the photos.
