Default Panel finished!

Here is the panel that I have been working on completed. I used for the finishing briwax in golden oak. I put 3 coats on using a hair dryer. My arms were getting pretty tired by the 3rd coat! I didn’t want to use power as I was worried buffing it that way would chip off on the carving. My husband is in the studio making a easel so I can put it on display at the sawmill. The panel will have a holder for a wall but for now the easel will make a nice display rack. Thanks all for the interest of my panel project. It’s been a great experience for both of us! I have to get a better angle as Darryl was trying to hold the panel so I could get a picture outside. So bare with the angle! Now onto my next project my door!
Thanks again!
Krum

Yea!!! (Clap, clap, clap!!!)_ Well done Krum, beautiful work. The border is stunning and the stags/bucks jump right out at ya. Love the fine detail in the scene itself, adds information without becoming too busy.

Beautiful! Great work. One question, you said you put on the wax with a hair dryer rather than buffing it....I don't understand. Can you heat instead of buffing?

Very nice work Krum...The detail is very outstanding and the color is a nice golden sheen... which adds to the carving.. Charlotte

Excellent carving and you used one of my favorite finishes, Bri Wax. I realy like the shadow lines you created with the leaves. Mike

Thanks all for the comments on the panel. I am proud of this one. Joy, I used briwax and as I was hand buffing it I used a hairdryer to set the briwax into the wood. I didn't want to use a power buffer as I didn't want to chip off any part of the designs so I used a clean rag as I buffed the briwax.

Question Re: Panel finished!

Once again, I really like your panel. I had some questions if you don't mind.

Is the wood basswood?

Did you put a prestain on before the Briwax. If so, what kind, oil base or water base?

How did you apply the Briwax, cotton cloth?

I'm thinking maybe trying Briwax on my relief too.

Sincerely,

Chipper67

Yes the wood is basswood. My husband laminated the boards for me. Using Bill Judts method in one of his books I had that curves the wood and then when you carve the wood curves back. I wish I had taken a picture of that to show how it looked. The briwax comes in several colors and I used the golden oak. It gives it a nice touch I think. For applying I used a old pillow case. You don't want something fuzzy to apply the briwax. The first coat I just used a brush to work it under all the cuts then just wiped it off...well alot of elbow grease doing it. Then I let it set over nite then added more of the briwax with the brush and while I buffed with a clean rag and used the hairdryer. I did 2 coats with the dryer. It helps the wood soak in the briwax so I was told. Also after heating it up the wood was smoother then when I started. People like touching carvings and smooth wood is what they like feeling. I bought the briwax from Rockler.com. Couldn't find anything in our town. Well hope I answered your questions. And thanks for the comments and interest.
