Default "overboard!"

The first figure is complete! Well, almost! I still have to do a couple of feathers for his head and then a Tomahawk and knife for his belt but he looks terrific upon the bow of the canoe.

I had planned on doing two Mountain men as the occupants of the canoe but decided that an Indian would give me an opportunity to do a lot more color, paint and detail. Besides, I'm an equal opportunity offender so no one can complain that I'm picking on a certain race! I'm sure there were instances where an Indian partnered up with a White-eye to do some business.

For those of you interested you can see the join line on the right arm. That hand will be holding a bow and some arrows.

Tomorrow I'll finish him up and then start the Mountain Man. He should be easy to do as he's going to be half-submerged!!

Another great looking piece Lynn. But I just gotta ask the question...(a further part of my education). Does the burning that you do prior to painting help to give your pieces that super clean look? I know you don't end up with fizzies, but I do; and I was just wondering if the burning might help clean up MY carvings.. Thanks for sharing another super carving, Tom H

Tom.....Sorry. Burning won't help you. Fuzzy areas are caused by not making the abolute minimum of cuts with a dull knife. It's that simple. lly, what you want to do is to make one cut and then another to remove the chip. If you have to go back you create a second ending in the wood and that weakened spot usually ends up being 'fuzzy. So....make sure you knife is as sharp as you can get it and try to get the chip out the first time. Practice..Practice...Practice!

To keep the piece clean I wash my hands frequently and also my glove. Once I finish a piece I clean it by using a Sand-O-Flex wheel with 380 grit paper. Some people wash their carving with soap and water although I don't think I would ever do that.

I will have to say that I do not see a join line for the arm. The only indication to me may be the wood color is slightly different. Really great work.....Myron

I do love the way you do faces and hands, they look so simple when you show them but it takes some doing to get them right.

tom H,
like lynn said, i think i spend more time honing my knife than carving.
its something to do between carving mistakes....
