Default Old world Santa

Started this fellow this weekend. He is 20" high and made of Basswood. Just about at the roughout stage right now. My own pattern. Will post more pics when he is finished and ready to paint.

I usually carve the hands separately on these as it gives them a lot more strength. With a hand sticking straight out as one of these will be they would be cross grain if I had left enough wood there. Also I can do a better job and do it easier by carving them separately. He will have a staff in his left hand.

Doug, Great lookin Santa. There are many different kinds of reds. Red red to a deep maroon. Any color with some antiqueing over it would be super. New varver question: How do you get that furry look on the collar and sleeves? TOM H

A light "ice blue" would be good with white highlights and dark blue accents. I'm sure you'll come up with something grand.

Beautiful job Doug, I especially enjoy the face, he has character!!! As for color, how about dark green? Why...........why not? Would look great with some nice white fur trim and red berries. What ever color you deceide, the carving is impressive.

I have found 2 ways to do that.A small gouge like 1/8 inch diameter used repeatedly or as I did on this carving a 1/8 diamond ball in a micromotor or a Dremel. My beginner's Power Carving Tutorial explains it fairly well, I think. If you are interested in it send me your E-mail address and I'll send it to you.
