That's an attractive piece of Indian art Hal. For butternut it doesn't seem to have much grain. I'm looking forward to seeing what finish you use on it.

Hal...I really like your interpretation of a hummingbird in the Northwest American Indian style!!! It's going to look soooo nice when finished...have you decided on what type of finish your going to put on it? Be sure and post a follow up photo or two when finished, I'm looking forward to seeing it! Thanks for sharing, it's a great carving!
