The latest issue of WCI is one of the best that I've seen in a while and one of my favorite projects came not from one of the feature articles, but instead from a picture sent in from a reader named Don Worley on page 14. During the last few weeks I've been teaching a lot of woodcarving classes and one of the kids really liked these simple carvings that Mr. Worley calls "No See-Ums" so I decided to carve one of 'em for additional inspiration. I did the Indian first and I now intend to attempt the other two in the photo.... then I'd like to branch out on my own to see what I can come up with. The kids want me to do a little Jamaican man complete with dreadlocks so I might just have to give that a try. I believe that my No See-Um is a little longer than those in the magazine AND I also added a lttle more length because I like having a sort of pedestal to name my characters with a little woodburning. They are made from a triangular piece of wood so I just grabbed a piece of 2" X 2" X 6" piece of basswood then cut it on the bandsaw from corner to corner thus giving me two triangular blanks. Thank you Mr. Worley for such a great idea for a lot of fun and also the perfect project for the aspiring young carvers in my class. I will now be incorporating this simple and fun project into future classes.
