Default New relief carved scene, dragon!

I'm taking the plunge and giving a scene a try, a scene involving a dragon. I've been struggling with a sketch for months for a piece for myself, and finally got the motivation I needed to do it.

It will be a bit of a joke scene.....showing a small but excited hunter running by his wife who's tending a pot on a fire with a dragon looming in the background approaching through a pass in the rocks. The caption will read....."I've brought home supper, but you'll need a bigger pot!"

These are the first roughed out shots from Saturdays work, I'll post yesterdays efforts later. I hope this works. Any pointers anyone? The wood is Basswood.

Enjoy,

Bob

There, a couple of quick snap shots of yesterdays progress. A long way to go, very rough yet.

Hey Bob
What a great idea, and a challenge. Should be quite a piece when finished. I have been contemplating carving a dragon as my choice for a course I will be taking in October. I've been searching for gargoyle pictures or other fantacy creatures and there seems to be a lot on dragons. You may have inspired me.

Hi Bob,
I was cracking up just reading your description of the scene. The project looks great (I love dragons), and can't wait to see the progression.

Another update for those interested. Worked to define the claws and the body. The dragon's body worm's it's way through the crevass and path, while the claws grip the surrounding rock to lift it's main body over. Slow going, but it's coming. I love it when I can get rolling on a carving, but kick my butt because I have to stop.

Hi there, i'm enjoying watching your progress - I like the use of scale, it makes the scene very dramatic! I don't envy you having to carve all those scales though! chipping...
