| | New projects, Captain John. Always attempting to try something different, I am tackling a larger version of a helmsman. I did a small one (3") a while ago and it looked kind of neat, so I'm giving a larger version a whirl (15"). Just in the rough stages, but it's beginning to look like something. I'm using a photo of my Great Granddaddy as a model, he was a captain of his own vessel, that was built in his family's small shipyard. The wood is Butternut.
Also, just did a box to hold an Eagle feather that Whitecree had sent me, just before he passed away. To do honour to his gift and his memory. I'm going to miss him! He was quite a guy.
Finally, another nautical burning of a brigantine at sea.
God I love carving!
Bob

| | Re: New projects. You have some nice carvings there Bob. The low profile box with a feather is very special of course. The nautical carving is neat. Did this come from a pattern? I'm hoping to try relief once the demand for wood spirits slows down.

| | Re: New projects. Thank you Patrick. No pattern, just a sketch worked out and traced on.

| | Re: New projects. Some very nice, clean work there Bob. That carving is going to be really nice. I appreciate your photos and the way you include some of your work area. One can tell a lot about the carver from seeing their work area and the tools. Thanks again, Tom H |

| | Re: New projects. Great start on the Captian, Bob! Looks like that will be a winner and a great keepsake since it's your Grandfather. Same with the feather box. By the way are those Henry Taylor tools in the photo, are they the micro set?

Gary.... those are Henry Taylor micro tools, really great for detailed relief carving. They are expensive, but worth every penny if you ask me.

| | Re: New projects, Capt John Progress report .......... did some carving on the body and legs. Getting a general impression of the stance of the Captain on the wheel. Also began to generalize the face and head, but just first cuts. This will be a challenge for me, I haven't done portraits in detail before.
