Default Never Waste Wood!

Two weeks ago I attempted to carve a running bear and about two days into the carving my bear turned into something that looked like a pig and I was ready to toss the project into the thrash. Sometimes you're the dog and sometimes you're the hydrant. This was one of those carvings that I was deffinitely the hydrant. So rather than scrap a perfectly good piece of basswood I decided to carve a head on it and then decided to mount it on top of a piece of poplar and turn it into a folk cane. I've got big paws and it fits nicely into my palm. My avatar sits on top of a smiliar piece of wood and it works very nicely for me. The finish is an oil based Minwax stain with about five coats of spray on Minwax urethane. It's all handcarved which is probably evident.... no power tools.

Waste not; want not! That's a very eye-catching stick.

Eddy some of the best carvings start out as accidents...serendipidy is my favorite word (even though I'm not sure I know how to spell it). Your walking stick turned out beautifully. The sad thing is that if you go to try and do it again on purpose, you probably won't be able to..... Good job on dealing with what the piece threw at you and making it work.

Well now, that's what you get for trying to make a bear out of a piece of wood intended for a cane topper! The wood was trying to tell you something.

Irishman... Let me tell you something about that snoz.... when you hold the cane your fingers fit real nice into those openings...just like it was planned! It isn't everyone that can stick their fingers up a nose in public and get away with it! Ha! Ha!

Thanks one and all for the compliments!
