| | Need some input Didn't want to use the "Need your Opinion" title from another thread so, Need input please.
The below picture is of aa ornament I have carved out of basswood and there is some neat gain in this piece. It is six by 4 by 1/2 inchs
I am thinking of leaving it natural but the little bride says to paint it like a Christmas tree or like I have done several others with the darker Green the white dry brushing. I appreciate your input.
Thanks |

Nice piece, and yes I really like the grain lines .
One thing I learned , while at the open house was in Lori Corbett's class, where she talked about the differences in the paints.
What about using an green incandescent wash. This should allow the grain to show through and still add a bit of color .

| | Re: Need some input The grain is really nice. If anything I would try to use the stain to create some shaded areas on the tree. Uncer the branches, the trunck etc. I have used stain to "paint" and shade many relief carvings with very nice effect. Besides - you can save the grain that way and show it off...
Just my two cents.

great looking tree,
you could still paint the tree but just use lite wash of acrylic and the when this is dry use blo or some minwax natural 209 with some burnt sienna mixed in and this will still bring out the grain.or you could do some shading with stain and then clear coat it with deft.

| | Re: Need some input Weeeeeeeeeeeeeell Dave, It is apparent,ya haven't ate me darling little bride's cooking eh? Been cold meals for years since I started calling her my little bride and writing stuff about her on thishere board for sure. As for sleeping on the couch, A better nights sleep, for sure.
Ok, don't have a picture yet of the Forest Green wash painted tree but hoping the BLO will bring back the grain as it masked it somewhat and the grain isn't as noticeable now. However, I did cut another tree out of the same piece of lumber and plan on carving it while I wait on the little bride tomorrow, She water walks for an hour at an indoor pool at a local hospital.
Ok, I will confess, by the looks of my belly, the little bride is a dandy cook. Well she is!
Be 38 years come Oct 24 and where am I taking her for our anniversiary? The Bishops Carving Class. Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Great planning on my part for sure. heheheheheheheheheheeh
That be ok folks, she got a new laptop for her present.
Ya see fellas, you by them what they want then they have no complaints when ya go out and buy or do what ya want. fir shur!
Well, it soundsd good! |

| | Re: Need some input Kenny the tree is great for pattern and wood grain, heck it looks like it has deft or other sealer on it already,
i agree with others that a light wash will still bring out the grain while giving it a more normal look of color, while doing the Santa ornaments i was introduced to puff paints, i haven't got all the colors i want yet but this puff paint can be applied as ornaments on the trees and snow-TeX if you wanted it, without covering the grain too much.. but be stingy on the clutter
the ornament would look fine as is, as far as that goes..

| | Re: Need some input Kenny, do two trees at a time. Leave one natural, and tint the other one. Hang on real tree beside each other....Best of both worlds.. LOL Tom H |

| | Re: Need some input Good idea Tom and that is what I have done, The Forset Green is a dark green color but with a wash, It is to light( to my thinking). However, the little bride and Daughter likes the wash effect but I don't. Looks like a sick tree for sure. Anyway, One will be with a wash and on natural.
Thomp, Nothing on them except one has a Forset Green wash on it and the other nothing. Both will get a boath in BLO and then dried.
Bart, I still have your wash technique setting on the paint table and tried to do what you said. Maybe a nother coat of the wash will make me satisfied with it. Took some ppictures but it does not look like any coloring on it.
I do appreciate all of the suggestions. |
