I think he is at the stage where you can go wherever you want with him, you can make him smiling and you could have a different santa if you go that way, like Nancy said, put a band around the hat with some holly or something.

It is interesting to see what others see in a carving and to get great suggestion form Carvers I admire. That is the state of quandary i am in at this time. What started out to be a Santa in a top hat, different I will say, but setting back and looking at the piece, the possibilities and almost endless.

Paul, I really didn't think about the old gentleman setting for a long period of time getting his photograph taken but having several tins of my forefathers, I can see the set llok about this carving.

A thought entered my mind, I know dangerous, an old mountain man back in civilization with his first beaver hat. See, I said it was dangerous for me to be thinking.

Boy howdy, I am bushed just thinking, I need a nap.

I'll decide later!

Kind of looks like Abe Lincoln, if Abe had ever let his beard grow.

kenny,

why not texture the hat brim to look like fur and paint it white or off white, and then paint the hair white or off white to give a little contrast between the two and then add the holly to the hat and paint it a good christmas red with some greenery for the holly.

just the way i see how it could be painted.hope it helps

bart

Late vote coming in...I vote for a Santa also. On this site I see so many different types Santa faces carved here. So I think your face will work for a Santa.
Kathy
I like the idea of a red hat with holly around the brim.

Kenny.......I'm going a different direction....Looks more to me like a "Patriotic Santa", give him a Flag painted hat red, white, and blue with stars. Bill

Scrooge?
It's a Christmas story, and a good reminder of charity for the holidays. Kind of a nice thought for a decoration. Dickens charactor specific.

I am going with the suggestion Bart gave me and Am attempting to put fur on the hat, However, I am not sure if it will be painted beaver color or a cream base coat with white dry brushed, holly berries and leaves on the band or what yet.
Finished up a stocking cap Santa and a Christmas tree last evening, but not satisfied with the tree.

Bill, that is what I thought after I carved him, either Uncle Sam or a Patriotic Santa. May still paint it red white and blue. Definitely different, but then, most know I am different.
Left that wide open Hi Ho.

Kenny,

AS i havent been able to do much carving lately, too many problems to mention..
so i dont feel my openion would hold for much , but i think all the ideas here are of some merrit, and to solve the what if question

i have had times when carving a carature when the fork in the road deciding factor will make or break the project.. several times i thought of sending off the project and have it duplicated at that stage into rough outs,
but not studying the process i dont know the expence..
but roughers need to make more rough outs at this decision process where the same rough out could be turned into different charters..

since you live with the 2 wemon that started the openion pole i would make at least 2 more alike this one and set time aside to decorate them in their way...
least you could appease the POWERS TO BE.
haahah

Thomp, Your opinion is valued for sure.
Wondered why I haven't seen you on the board. Hope all is well.

Guess great minds think alike as I have cut out several blanks thius week of that Piece and was thinking of carving it to the different suggestion by those two vemon as they both shared the same idea in wanting ornaments for Christmas.

BTW, It is your great mind as mine is shot!

Thank you for that post.
