| | Re: Napolean in Progress Nice job Garry I dont know of anyone but you that could get that much mileage out of one thread. Hmmm maybe you broke the leg off on purpose to keep the thread running.ROTFL Just kidding it's a magnificent piece you have done really well. Are you close to finishing or are you going to milk it some more?

| | Re: Napolean in Progress Toffeeliz,
I am a long long long way from being close to that level , but I am having fun . If you keep going you will past me like a freight train, there is something that happens with woodcarving , things go from being a struggle to just natural , and the work improves in leaps, and once you learn the cuts , only what you chose will hold you from doing anything you want.
Lynn ,
It would be nice to have this as a commission, but it isn't. I do have two commissions on the floor right now , the first half of the first has been shipped . The second half has to wait for a while , the second is a ram's head , that is still on the drawing table to get it right, since it includes a scroll hanging from it's mouth. Also if it was a commission , I would have hours to work on it insted of just the 2 -3 a day I have set aside for personal carving.
Colin ,
I have not even started to detail, ( so I guess the string contintues ) I hope tonight to finish the right side leg. Once the right side is in place then I will start bring the cape down to the finished size. It is still about 3/8 - 1/2 thick in places and I want to thin it down . Anyway time to start work on it .

| | Re: Napolean in Progress Wow, looking pretty awesome!! That must've been something doing the inside of the horses mouth. Do you plane tto paint it, or stain it, or leave it natural. I like it natural. One day I hope to be so bold to take on such a task. |

| | Re: Napolean in Progress Garry,
Took time to read the whole thread. I hate when life makes me so busy that I miss out on things. Garry get some #10 Dress makers pins. They are thinner than the pins you get in fabric stores. I have "stuck" many a piece back together with them. Mahagony is an open grained wood push the pin into the broken parts with twezers or a small pair of needle nose. When you pull them out it just looks like the grain. If you can get it together in a place where you can't see the pin, cut em off, adds the extra strength.
Sue I don't use super glue without some Quilters pins or Dressmakers pins. I pick up the pieces that need to be set with them and set the piece in place, then remove the pins when the glue is dried.
Garry is that the same wood that was in the back of your truck a month or so ago?
Looking Good Can't wat to see it for real.
Goody

| | Re: Napolean in Progress Ash, I was off the board for a bit - every time this happens there are so many surprises waiting here - this is one of them! You sure took a great project on and it is fascinating to read all the comments and discussions, very educational and interesting to see all the different opinions and views, I still did not manage to read all of them and have to do it later - I do not want to miss any. Your Napoleon is coming out really nice it will be an impressive piece when finished. Excellent job. Fred |

| | Re: Napolean in Progress Sorry for the delay , been a bit crazy here.
Jim ,
I agree the wood is naturally amazing, the weather has been really high humidity here , so I have been lightly oiling the wood everyday , to keep it from checking , that has allowed it to take a deep rich look , and now since I started to do the detailing , a lot of people are comming in just to see it. Each with an opinion , it is funny because I am not even close to finishing it . So much to do .
Ash
Goody .
Ah , ... No this is another log ,,, ah it feel from the sky .... ah , it's really roadkill ....
LOL yes it is the wood you gave me. And Mike told me to tell you you can't have it back it's his .... Rofl. As soon as I finsh a few more details , I will come over for a visit as long as the dumpster and the boss is gone !
Beside I want to see the dragon !
Ash
Fred , . It is much different than anthing I have ever done, but after a year of basically not carving it really has been fun. It may still be firewood , but it has given me so much pleasure just to sit and relax doing it , I almost forget to go home.

| | Re: Napolean in Progress hi ashby, this is coming along nicely...i am amazed by the rich shine the carving already has. does this shinyness not disturb while carving, or is it so strong only in foto ? ... and, if you not mind me saying, i think is good if you can pay some attention to the bones inside...for example, napoleons leg looks a little like made of rubber, or the horses right front leg, i would expect to see more of the bony part of the joint, i mean just that directly under napoleons knee... but as said, ggreat progress, and i am still amazed by your way of work. is fun to watch | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
