Worked some more today on my west coast native carving. You remember I told you the story last time how Nanasimgat's wife had been taken by the killer whales to become the wife of the chief killer whale. As ledgend has it that by following the kelp beds aided by his friend the sea otter Nanasimgat was able to track down the killer whales. The native belief is that animals can transform into human form and back again so the carving of his wife in the jaws of the killer whale is not that she is being eaten by being transformed. Just a little further along certainly not anywhere near finished just wanted to show you the progress. There are adjustments in form that I need to make and then the hours and hours of sanding that needs to be done. The challenge of this carving as it is all from one piece of wood was getting the underneath of the whale especially the fines also trying to carve Nanasimgat's face as it is so close the dorsal fin of the whale. Again all with knife and chisel so far maybe its time for me to get out that power carver that I have never used, we will see. Thanks for looking and please let me know of anything I have missed or suggestions that you think will aid me along the way. I do consider all of your ideas and comments I love to learn and always open to critique and suggestions Colin

Colin, your carving is really taking shape and you are doing a super job of bringing that subject to life. The power carvers are wonderful tools I have one and use it often, especially in those tight areas. Keep up the good work and thank you, so much for sharing your progress.

Looking good, Colin! I agree with Kathy that about power tools. A rotary tool with a couple of diamond burrs will help a lot on the face. Also a 1/2 inch diameter by 1/2 inch long sanding drum (Dremel) will help a lot with the smoothing of the larger surfaces. You can also get a 1/4 inch diameter drum that's a half inch long as well.
