I think Charles Schultz would be proud that you liked his Snoopy enough to copy it. I like him. I wouldn't have thought of gesso for wood. That's why I like this board, I learn something everytime I log on.

Infranview is one of the best free ware photo editors out there... available from
IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers worldwide
best thing about it is the printer module has scalable printing in inches/metric original or stretched to window size.. its best thing to print a image in scale to the size of the wood you just happen to have,
i have used it since version 1 its now version 4 and i use it daily,
its got a little learning curve, but well worth the effort if you make your own patterns or like to change the size of pictures for patterns

Thanks everyone! I was just joshin' about apologizing to Mr. Schulz although it's a good thing that he was a better cartoonist than I am a whittler or we might never have had Peanuts!

Mr. Bears!... Thomp has given you the skinny on IrfanView. It's a great little program and real easy to figure out. I only use a fraction of it's ability but still find it invaluable. If I can be of any assistance send me a PM with your questions. I'm sure Thomp will be happy to answer your questions also. He turned me on to the program.

Sam... This is what I used as a pattern for my carving. I only had a side profile and it's even skewed a bit so I allowed for the slight angle when I roughed it out. As for the front and back views I guesstimated...

Kenny... I've got more stuff to paint but after my doctor's visit today it looks like it will be at least another week or two before they give me my knives back so my carving will have to remain on hold!

RussL.... Flat plan...hmmmm??? Do you think that Schultz had a Scandinavian Beagle in mind when he made him all white?

Catbird... Just as long as he's laughing with me and not at me... Ha! Ha!

Shawn... I wonder! If Disney owned Peanuts I'd already have a cease and desist email!

Merle... Being a cartoon character I tried to make him as simple as possible. I used a magic marker on the mouth and toes and I painted the eyes and ears. I wanted to make the feet look more like the cartoon Snoopy but I couldn't out how they would balance the weight of the head if I did.

Ron... You're right! I tried the wash to begin with and it just soaked in looking chalky brown. It might have worked had the wood been a whiter northern basswood.

Wildhare... Usually a wash makes for a much more attractive finish but every once in a while you run across a project where you want or need an opaque finish and applying gesso will give you some really bright colors. I learned this little trick early on painting wooden plugs.

Thomp... Always appreciate your input and thanks for the heads up on the new Version. Sounds like I need to do an update this evening!
