| | My Latest Project My latest project has been to revisit the photography skills I learned in high school and get some better pictures of my carvings. Thanks to Lynn Doughty's thread from awhile back I was able to set up a contraption that I think is working OK. I need to keep adjusting the lights and keep shooting but that's the beauty of digital photography. I am posting a couple of pics of a carving I call Rip Van Winkle. It's cottonwood bark about 28 inches long 3 inches or so across and 2 1/2 inches deep. Any critiques of the photography or the carving are welcome. |

| | Re: My Latest Project Difficult to give you feedback on a carving that turned out so well. I suppose you could have made him happy, however, that's the appeal of woodspirits as their expression is usually very somber. Great job on the carving.

| | Re: My Latest Project I think I know that fella!
The sizing is about right. One shot to establish the overall piece, a close-up to get a better look at facial details. Good work! |

| | Re: My Latest Project Nice photos! Glad my suggestions helped you. You might try moving your lights back from the piece to lessen the 'shine' but that might also be the finish on the piece. A gloss, semi-gloss or even satin finish really reflects the light. A suggestion...on your next trip to the Hobby shop or Hobby Lobby look for a can of Testor's DulCoat in the model paint section. It's a flattening spray that will kill a lot of the shine. Don't use it as a finish just spritz it on the areas that really shine.
Again, nice photos! |

| | Re: My Latest Project Thank you everyone for the kind comments. Thanks Lynn for the suggestion of Dulcoat. Since this carving is a gift I have already given to my mother I won't make any changes to it. I will try it on other carvings as well as moving my lighting around to try to lessen the bright spots. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
