| | Re: my first knife carved santa Very nice Santa Hugh. I too am trying knives and chisels. I powered carved for about 10 years, but someone told me that carving with power (rotary) wasn't real carving. You ever run into that kind of thinking? And yes I get very frustrated using knives and palm chisels, because it's so different than with power. I'll post a photo of my first Santa if I can find it. TOM H |

| | Re: my first knife carved santa About the beard, I think I was carving feathers, lol. It looks more like feathering to me than wiskers. I used the small round chisel, for most of the hollows, and cleaned it up with the Gesswein. And I am hooked on Santas. I can't quit until I get one right, and that might be never. Good fun trying. This first one was carved from a piece of cedar. Think it might be better to try one from basswood. Thanks all. |

| | Re: my first knife carved santa Hugh - When you get to the point of carving perfection, you might as well find something else to do. When that time comes it will cease to be fun and challenging. Your bird carvings are pretty close to perfect now. I can see why you are branching out.

| | Re: my first knife carved santa Nice Santa Huge. I carve all my santas with hand tools. I just like the way it all feels. As far as beards and feathers I use a lot of the bird feather tricks on the beards. You can layer a beard just like feathers only a different shape. And you don't have to worry about the quills being right. Use some of the same tricks for painting shadow the recesses and highlight the crowns.
