My first santa, carved with a knife. finished with power tools. I did a little more touch up after taking the photo.

Excellent first carved Santa Hugh. I love the chubby cheeks and very well painted.

Well done Hugh, first class job. Does this mean you are branching out?

Very nice job Hugh. I like the,"raggity" beard. How big a carving is it?
My only suggestion would be to use different shades of white for the beard and the fur trim.(this from someone who has trouble with my kids paint-by-number sets) don

Not very big Don, about 6" tall. It seems so strange to me, that I can shape things with the power tools, but it seems so different working with a knife. My wife and children gave me a set of knives for chistmas. And I have been trying to learn to use them. When looking at the beautiful knife and chisel carvings of others on this forum, I'm challenged to try and create something. Its a lot more difficult than it appears. Its fun to try new things. I think there is a lap table in the new issue of WCI that is coming out, and that will be my next project. Lots of good s in that magazine. thanks all.
About the white paint. The photo is terrible, but I did paint it an off white, and then highlited the white with straight titanium white, and added a little black and made a few shadows. My photography skills need a little honing also.
